Part 2: Setting it up.  Its pretty straight forward.  You might have to fish around the website to get it to download the free version, and when you download and run it, it will have the option to purchase or install free basic protection.  Go with free.  Tell it to download updates when it asks (You will need the Internet for this step).  Your antivirus should be allowed to update dailey (It will usually update in the middle of the night, but you can change this in the program options).  You will find an option to run a daily scan.  I usually turn off the daily scan because the avg resident shield (part of the whole software package) is pretty good at stopping viruses before they have a chance to run.  The difference between the daily scan and the avg resident shield is this:  The scan checks every file on your hard drive for viruses.  The resident shield checks every file that is accessed in the system.  This gives it the opportunity to prevent naughty software from running on the system.

Part 3: (Free) Anti-spyware software.  Why get anti-spyware if I have antivirus? 2 Reasons: 1) Some viruses may not classify as spyware, and some spyware may not classify as viruses, and 2) No antivirus is 100%.  Getting 2 (that don’t conflict with each other) should allow more than adequate coverage.  This is where Spybot S&D (Search and Destroy) comes in.  It is pretty much the best at what it does (and its #2 in google search results for free anti-spyware).  Spybot also does several things to protect your system that the antivirus software does not, mostly related to your browser.  It has a feature called “Passive Protection” where it basically blacklists known bad websites and known bad active x controls.  It also installs a program called “Tea Timer” which it uses to monitor running processes and your registry, and can be used to prevent changes (Bad software will often want to make changes to your registry).
