Step 3: Hijack this! or Hijack Free
Hijack this! is available from http://download.cnet.com/Trend-Micro-HijackThis/3000-8022_4-10227353.html or alternativly (necessary if you are using windows 7) Asquared’s Hijack Free (http://www.hijackfree.com/en/).  Both do basically the same thing.  Please NOTE:  These programs are not to be used like antivirus software.  They do not distinguish good softare from bad software, they simply tell you what software starts with the system.  Your virus can usually be found in here.  If you don’t know what you are doing at this point, either be ready to learn, or skip to my level 2 virus removal guide.

Run a scan in hjt or hjf.  Open IE (preferably on a second machine if you have one available).  Start typing in the names of the “exe” (files that end in .exe like svhost.exe etc) files into google and see what each file does.  At some point you should hit 1 that will show as a virus.  It should also be noted that viruses can be named anything, and some of them name themselves randomly when infecting a pc.  If it looks suspicious, tag it for removal, if you remove something you shouldn’t have and your system won’t boot, then I have a guide for that.

Alternativly, you can post your hijack this log onto the internet (do a google search), and take advice from others willing to help.

Now is the part where I get lazy… You see, people with more time than I have spent it making a comprehensivec guide specifically for Hijack this at http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial42.html and I suggest you check it out if hijack this is looking scary to you.

You can also skip step 3 and go straight to my virus method 2 removal guide.
Method 2

Good Luck.
